Finale Fashion - Gossip Girl
Constance Graduates in Style

Unless you have been living under a, proverbial, rock for the last two years or, at the very least, on a desert island you will know that Gossip Girl is the 21st century’s younger, hipper, answer to Sex & the City. Like its predecessor it can be counted on to provide your weekly fix of fashion, sex and scandal, focusing in particular on the former. Stylist Eric Daman, former assistant to Sex & the City’s style guru Patricia Field, creates the looks for the show which are always offbeat, colourful and ahead of the curve. This week’s finale was no exception as the girls proved, as they have so often done with their uniforms, that graduation is no occasion to conform.
Blair’s ladies in waiting belted their gowns and accessorised them with pearls and chunky necklaces, the Queen B herself offsetting her green gown with a long set of pearls. Not to be outdone Chuck Bass, arguably the most stylish man on television, set off his blue gown with a striking tangerine shirt and orange tie.
Serena Van Der Woodsen, however, let the side down. Often the weakest link in the show style wise her long blue evening gown came across as a fashion faux pas as opposed to fashion forward seeming uncomfortably inappropriate for the daytime occasion. Leaving her graduation gown hanging open and choosing to stick a bit of string in her hair as opposed to wearing a cap gave off an air of slovenly nonchalance that suggested that Serena just did not care. Not only that, but the latter was comical as well as frustratingly unrealistic. The show may be fiction, but at school like Constance there would be no exceptions when it came to wearing a cap at graduation. The Gossip Girl ladies may be all about non conformist fashion, but it is arguable that the most stylish are able to stand out whilst still remaining appropriately dressed for the occasion. On that count Blair and her ladies succeeded where Serena failed.
