What’s That on Her Head?
Princess Beatrice’s Royal Wedding Hat Auctioned for Charity
It has been likened to an octopus sitting on her head, a toilet seat, cat flap and has even drawn unfavourable comparisons the ugly sisters in Disney’s Cinderella. Yes, we are talking about the hat Princess Beatrice wore to the Royal Wedding. The Phillip Treacy creation made out of a soft tea rose silk and designed to be worn in front of the hairline was met with scorn from the fashion community and the public alike, the latter setting up a Facebook page, Princess Beatrice's ridiculous Royal Wedding hat, which to date has 143,119 likes.
Treacy, however, has defended that hat stating that, “My inspiration was beauty and elegance - it's a 21st century royal wedding. They didn't tell me [what they wanted] because I've known them for a long time... I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't [like them]".
Beatrice herself, on the other hand, has taken a more light hearted approach in auctioning the hat on e-Bay in aid of UNICEF and Children in Crisis. She stated that, “I hope whoever wins the auction has as much fun with the hat as I have” and even provided a link to the aforementioned Facebook page. The auction closed this evening, Sunday 22nd May, with bids at 81,100.01 GPB.
